Prior to law school, Rachel earned a Master's degree in sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During that time, she was a member of the Graduate Employee Organization, a unit of United Auto Workers Local 2322. Originally from Kansas (Go Jayhawks!), Rachel graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa with a B.A. in sociology before heading east.

Rachel lives in Maynard, Massachusetts, with her husband, Thomas Illingsworth. When she is not fighting for workers' rights, Rachel is learning to play golf and to ski. She also enjoys long-distance running and spinning.
